Welcome from the Program Director

Davis Yang M.D.

Welcome to MacNeal!

Thanks for visiting this site and learning more about our program.  We are fortunate that family medicine is strong in Chicago and that there are several high-quality family medicine residencies to choose from.

There are two important reasons why I strongly believe you should seriously consider MacNeal if you are looking for family medicine training in Chicago.

First is our long tradition of excellence in family medicine training.  We are the oldest and largest FM program in Chicago.  We count our successes and streaks, such as board pass rate and full accreditation status, in decades not years.  MacNeal hospital, likewise, has been a stable, strong, quality-focused partner for our training and patient care.  We have naturally grown and adapted over the almost 50 year history of the program, but we have retained our founding beliefs in the importance of primary care and in caring for our community.

The second difference you will find at MacNeal is that everyone in the residency is singularly dedicated to resident education.  The program is built around resident-centered learning and a single practice site. All the faculty’s professional efforts are entirely for the residency program.  Their practice, teaching, and administrative roles are all designed for the residents and the residency.  All residents and all faculty are practice partners at the same site.  All of our hospital experiences take place at MacNeal, a community hospital, across the street from our FMC.

You can find more information about the MacNeal difference on these pages, and I strongly encourage you to visit with us and meet our amazing residents and faculty, and really see the MacNeal difference for yourself.

Message from our Chief Residents

MacNeal Chief Residents

Hey! Welcome to our website and thank you so much for taking an interest in our MacNeal family!

MacNeal is a large, well-established program that genuinely has a close-knit family feel. Our residency thrives from the quality of people that work here, including our friendly staff, extremely knowledgeable and approachable faculty, and amazing residents. We pride ourselves on a well-rounded Family Medicine experience and draw residents from around the country for many reasons. Sander is from Michigan (GO BLUE!) and came to MacNeal because of the culturally diverse patient population, along with its strong Sports Medicine training. Karla is from Indiana, by way of University of Michigan (GO BLUE!) and was drawn to MacNeal after she loved her interview day. She witnessed how happy the residents were, and saw how she could improve her Spanish as a clinician! Both of us have found MacNeal to be an awesome place to train, make life-long friends, and truly could not be happier.

The outpatient clinic is conveniently located across the street from the hospital and serves a diverse patient population that prepares residents to practice in any setting. Our program is unique in that we have three fellowships: faculty development, women’s health, and Sports Medicine. The true heart of the program, however, lies in our hardworking staff and faculty, who are committed to creating an outstanding learning environment. With nearly 40 residents, we have a call schedule that allows us to maintain a great work/life balance. This also means there is always someone around and willing to order food with you while on call!

MacNeal is located just outside of Chicago, with about half of our residents living in the city and half residing in the suburbs. Chicago is an incredible place to live and there is always something fun to plan with your fellow residents. We spend many days/nights off grabbing dinner and drinks, having trivia nights, relaxing on the beach, attending sporting events, and feeling old while celebrating birthdays, weddings, and baby showers!

We remember how stressful the interview process can be, so please do not hesitate to contact us with ANY questions you may have (our emails are listed in the ‘Meet Our Residents’ section.) We both have loved our time here, and hope you find MacNeal to be as wonderful as we do. We look forward to meeting you!

Best wishes,

Karla and Sander
