Introduction:
The goal of the Vanguard MacNeal Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship is to train fellows to provide excellent care to people of all ages who are physically active. Experiences are included that focus on the evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of activity-related injuries as well as non-musculoskeletal conditions in athletes. Fellowship graduates should possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to serve as a team physician, cover mass events, counsel his or her patients about regular physical activity, and manage medical and orthopedic conditions arising from such activity.
Length: 1 year
Eligibility:
Applications are accepted from residents in, or graduates of, accredited residencies in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and PM&R.
We accept the universal application from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and participate in the NRMP match.

Team Physician Experience
Pre-participation physicals
Serve as team physician for local high school and college teams (includes training room visits and event coverage)
Opportunity to cover mass events (e.g., Chicago Triathlon, Chicago Marathon)
Teaching Responsibilities
The fellow will have the opportunity to provide teaching to medical students and family medicine residents in the family medicine clinic and sports medicine clinic. The fellow will also have the opportunity to give presentations in a variety of settings.
Educational Opportunities
- Educational leave – 5 days per year
- Weekly sports medicine conferences
- Family practice conferences
- Funded CME for sports medicine
Research
The fellow will be expected to investigate a topic of interest in depth which will result in a tangible project, such as an article of publishable quality, a presentation at a national or local academic meeting, etc. The fellow is sent each year to the AMSSM Fellow's Research Conference.
Leave Policy – 3 weeks of vacation per year
