Information for Referring Physicians
In response to the need for advanced cancer care within the community, Vanguard MacNeal Hospital has partnered with the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to provide patients with comprehensive, well-coordinated care and to ensure they are treated with best practice protocols.
Vanguard MacNeal cancer patients now see a medical oncologist from UIC working exclusively at Vanguard MacNeal. These physicians practice evidence-based medicine and work closely with their Vanguard MacNeal colleagues to provide comprehensive care. Whenever appropriate, patients are given access to one of many clinical trials.
The vast majority of cancer patients are treated with chemotherapy, intravenous treatments, radiation or surgery, individually or in combination. When bone marrow or liver transplantation or treatment for leukemia is needed, the patient is seamlessly transferred to UIC, but receives follow-up care at Vanguard MacNeal.
This comprehensive approach to cancer care provides patients with the benefits of a major academic medical center in the comfort of their own neighborhood.
