Appropriate treatment for cancer starts with an accurate diagnosis. The MacNeal Radiology Department provides patients with the latest technologies in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scanning, nuclear medicine and ultrasound imaging. The many tests/scans that are offered include bone scans, myocardial perfusion imaging, gallium scanning and SPECT imaging.
Additionally, we offer PET/CT exams at our Riverside office, just minutes away from our main location. A PET/CT exam helps your physician better diagnose your condition, determine what course of treatment is right for you and monitor your progress.
The Breast Care Center offers four digital mammography units, making it fully digital for both screening and diagnostic mammography. Other services offered include breast ultrasound, cyst aspiration and stereotactic biopsy. MacNeal's electronic medical record system makes radiology images immediately available to physicians throughout the hospital and in the physicians' offices.
Pathology at MacNeal
Tissue samples taken during a biopsy are examined by a pathologist for cancer cells. MacNeal Hospital has six board-certified pathologists on staff, all subspecialists in certain cancers and techniques. They use state-of-the-art technology to provide most answers within 24-hours, and are able to examine some specimens the same day. As members of a multispecialty team, they provide valuable insight that helps guide the team in making treatment decisions.
