MacNeal Hospital supports direct care nurse and leader education with generous tuition forgiveness programs. Over 100 nurses have enrolled in MacNeal's on-site back-to- school program since 2006 and received a full scholarship. That is one out of every six nurses employed at the hospital. MacNeal Hospital has partnered with Lewis University for both their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs.
MacNeal's Department of Nursing was recently able to expand its investment in the professional development of nurses, thanks to the efforts of Susan Morby, Director of Professional Practice, and Angela Skalla, previous MacNeal CNO, who received a grant through the Illinois Workforce Investment Act. The grant money is earmarked to help pay for 25 nurses to complete their BSN degrees, and 20 nurses to acquire their MSN degrees. Those in the MSN program have signed contracts that they will teach at least two semesters within the two years following their graduation as a solution to the nursing teacher shortage and as a way to serve their community.
